The first proposal enhances the task-based systems with an asynchronous, concurrent, and parameterizable behavior. The improvements go across the full-stack, from the programming model level down to the low-level communications used betweenthe libraries and the co-processors. The evaluation shows that the implemented improvements boost the applications' performance as they can be easily tuned for the running platform.

The second proposal adds support for task spawn and synchronization in co-processors. The offloaded tasks can create child tasks that target other architectures or remain inside the co-processor. This allows the programmers to implement applicationseasily and effectively. The evaluation shows the efficiency of the proposal implementation in terms of latency and power consumption.

The results show that applications can increase their performance and optimize their power consumption just moving the task spawn from the host threads to the co-processor. This is thanks to the low-latency task management inside theco-processors, which also reduces the communications between the host and the co-processor. The third proposal extends task-based programming models with concepts of recurrent workloads.

The regular task syntax has been extended with new clauses to label the recurrent tasks and provide the needed information to the runtime. The evaluation shows an application programmability increase thanks to the new syntax, which allows the specification of recurrent systems with much less code and better accuracy. Also, the direct management of task repetitions and periods in the co-processors allows an almost zero-latency management that is able to manage any task granularity.

With the steady increase in datasets and model sizes, there has been a recent surge in Machine Learning applications in High-Performance Computing HPC to speed up training. Deep Neural Network DNN frameworks use distributed training to enable faster time to convergence and alleviate memory capacity limitations when training large models or using high dimension inputs. This thesis addresses scalability and resilience challenges by looking at different parts of the Machine Learning Workflow.

We first address hyper-parameters optimisation HPO , which is one of the most time consuming and resource-intensive parts of a Machine Learning Workflow. We present a HPO scheme built on top of PyCOMPSs, a programming model and runtime which aims to ease the development of parallel applications for distributed infrastructures. We show that PyCOMPSs is a robust framework that can accelerate the process of Hyperparameter Optimisation across multiple devices and computing units.

We perform a detailed performance analysis showing different configurations to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We then analyse the compute, communication, and memory requirements of DNNs to understand the trade-offs of different parallelism approaches on performance and scalability. We leverage our model-driven analysis to be the basis for an oracle utility that can help detect the limitations and bottlenecks of different parallelism approaches at scale.

While significant effort has been put to facilitate distributed training by DL frameworks,fault tolerance has been largely ignored. We examine the checkpointing implementation of popular DL platforms. We evaluate the computational cost of checkpointing, file formats and file sizes, the impact of scale, and deterministic checkpointing.

We provide discussion points that can aid users in selecting a fault-tolerant framework to use in HPC. We also provide take-away points that framework developers can use to facilitate better checkpointing of DL workloads in HPC. They are a key tool to add functionality to existing networks, and are used in different layers of the Internet stack for a wide variety of purposes, like confidentiality, Quality of Service, virtual networking, etc.

Specifically, network overlays in the IP networking layer are widely used in some of these use cases. However, these kind of overlay networks do not have as many functionalities as overlays in other layers. Taking this into account, this thesis strives to add new features and improve on others of IP overlay networks, in order to support emerging challenges. This thesis focuses on three axes: security, trust, and deployment in enterprise scenarios.

First, regarding security, we explore how to simplify the setup of secure tunnels over the Internet, without relying on external Public Key Infrastructure or proprietary solutions. To this purpose, we leverage WireGuard, a state of the art VPN protocol, and add a control plane on top of it to distribute encryption keys.

In addition, we present the implementation of a prototype and a performance evaluation. Second, with respect to trust, we investigate how emerging blockchain technology can be used in distributed mapping systems. Mapping systems are a database used in some overlay network deployments to assist in the creation of tunnels, by storing overlay to underlay pairs of addresses.

Mapping systems are not commonly used in scenarios with multiple administrative domains, due to configuration complexity and centralized control. We explore how some of the properties of blockchains, such as distributed control, or auditability, can help in building these type of mapping systems.

We take into account both the policy aspects, that is, the advantages of a distributed trust scheme, and the technical ones, like simplified management. In addition, we present two deployment scenarios: one to increase the security of BGP-based inter-domain routing, and a set of cooperating companies that want to establish communications among themselves.

Finally, we focus on the deployment of enterprise networks leveraging overlay networks. First, we discuss the challenges present in current enterprise networks, such as segmentation, mobility, or simplified operations. Then, we present a design based on overlay networks and SDN principles to address them, along with an evaluation of two real-life deployments.

We conclude with a design tailored for future enterprise networks, based also on overlay networks and a layered approach. This solution aims to provide mobility, multi-homing, confidentiality, user and application identity, and access control policies for enterprise endpoints connected from any network, either in the campus or outside. Thus, the 6G architecture will need to be adapted to serve the ever-evolving capacity and quality of service requirements.

To satisfy these ever-increasing demands, multiple enablers such as visible light communication, light fidelity, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces RISs , THz communications, etc. Such manipulations include absorption of certain components of the impinging radio signals, as well as fine-grained control of these signals in terms of direction, polarization, phase, and power in a frequency-selective manner. An RIS consists of a device that controls the behavior of the Electromagnetic EM waves, alongside circuits that provide the tuning mechanism and the intelligence to control it.

This device that controls the EM wave behavior can be realized using Metasurfaces MSs , which are electromagnetically thin-film and planar artificial structures that enable the control of EM fields in engineered and even atypical ways. On a more granular level, an MS is composed of subwavelength building blocks known as unit cells or meta-atoms.

The design of these unit cells depends on the required EM functionality, reconfigurability, or accuracy. The promises of the RIS paradigm, therefore, come at the expense of a non-trivial complexity in the MS. On the one hand, the performance of an RIS depends on the size of the unit cells, the number of unit cell states, or the size of the whole MS.

On the other hand, there are costs and energy overheads associated with the fabrication and operation of RISs that also scale with the aforementioned factors. This thesis aims to bridge this gap by providing a method to dimension the RIS through a design-oriented scalability analysis of programmable MSs.

Besides the challenge of design complexity, MSs will become prone to failure as they continue integrating sophisticated tuning, control and sensing circuits. However, the impact of faults on the performance of individual MSs is not well understood yet. This thesis proposes a framework to evaluate the impact of failures in programmable MSs, distinguishing between the type of faults and their spatial distribution. While RIS generally hinge on the design of rather complex tunable MSs, such a complexity can be amortized if the functionality provided by the RIS can be shared among multiple users.

This thesis introduces a coding i. Then, the wireless channel of such framework among multiple users is evaluated. The capacity is increased at least one order of magnitude compared to a scenario without RIS. Machine learning techniques, and particularly Neural Networks NNs , owing to their ability to learn complex relationships between input and output data, are capable of solving differential equations, thereby circumventing the need for numerical calculations.
